For at least 30 years politicians. and several lobbying groups have been perpetuating the myth that battery-powered EVs (BEV) are "Zero Emission Vehicles.  Recently, they formed a lobbying group by that very name and their goal is to encroach on people's freedom and grant a monopoly on all "motive power" to the people who own the world's large utility companies.    See: https://www.zeta2030.org/  Needless to say, there is a large public backlash to this erosion of human rights.
If we ignore the health-damaging toxic gasses emitted by the grid and just look at the non toxic CO2 emission it becomes clear that the typical BEV charged by the grid has a much larger "Carbon Footprint" than a comparable IC powered vehicle.  Using studies by academician, government bodies, and professionals cited on several of the following pages the analyst below is a comparison of the CO2 emitted by a 2022 Toyota Camry, 2022 BMW 320 I and a 2022 Tesla Model 3 with 100 kWh battery pack which has a useful life of 100,000 miles.
The 2022 Camry using regular gasoline has
upstream and tailpipe emissions of 335 grams of CO2/mile.
See: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=43305

The 2022 BMW 320 I using regular gasoline has
upstream and tailpipe emissions of 370 grams of CO2/mile.

Tesla model 3 with a 100 kWh battery emits 483 grams of CO2/mile when charged by a natural gas plant or 637 grams of CO2/mile when charged by a coal plant.  Calling an EV charged by the Grid a "Zero Emission Vehicle" is a lie of mythical proportions.
The calculations are below.

Natural gas generated electricity              = 600 grams of CO2/kWh
Transformer & distribution loss 11%       = 666 grams at charging location
Charging efficiency 85%                             =  765 grams after charging
kWh used per 100 miles                             =  30 kWh
Kg of CO2/100 miles                                    =  22.86
Grams of CO2/mile                                      = 229
Kg of CO2/kWh of battery                           = 254 kg/kWh
Kg of CO2 for 100 kWh battery                  = 25.4 metric tons
Amortized CO2/mile                                     = 254 grams/mile
Total  Natural gas power                            = 483 kg of CO2/mile

Same calculation with coal                         = 1,000 grams of CO2/kWh
Transformer & distribution loss 11%        = 1,110 grams at charging location
Charging efficiency 85%                               = 1,276 grams after charging
kWh used per 100 miles                               = 30 kWh
Kg of CO2/100 miles                                      = 38.3 KG
Grams of CO2/mile                                        = 383 grams/mile
Battery  CO2/mile  (as above)                      = 254 kg/mile
Total with coal generated electricity           = 637 kg of CO2/mile

Kamtech SA. has a technology that creates lower CO2 than BEVs, IC, and hybrids, the Kamtech Range Extender.  The attached graph (slide 3 above) from a recent study illustrates the total lifetime CO2 emissions of electric vehicles  (BEV) conventional vehicles and REEVs, including the CO2 emitted by the mining and manufacture of an EV's battery pack.  This graph clearly demonstrates that an efficient REEV generates far less CO2 in its lifetime than any other vehicle type!  A Kamtech REEV is also less costly, safer, and can have a far greater range than any other vehicle type!    See: slide #3 source is
